River Road Colonial

After living for many years with a first floor layout that included a bedroom and a study with only a small bathroom, two empty nesters decided it was time for a change to better suit their lifestyle now. Eliminating the study made way for a major bathroom makeover (and for the addition of a walk-in closet). The resulting room is bright space filled with tactile and visual details that give the room an abundance of personality. Key to keeping the sleek serenity of the space is the crisp yet inviting color palette. Choosing white for the walls and under-the-sink cabinets makes the space feel bigger, and using two mirrors above the countertop instead of one helps to create the illusion of additional height in the room. Pops of color and texture add intrigue and enliven the space. With elements toggling effortlessly between the modern and the eclectic, we transformed the bathroom into a bright, relaxing, and soothing oasis that the homeowners will enjoy for years to come.

A young Houston Couple with small children wanted us to create a vibrant living space that highlighted their casual chic style and eclectic tastes. For the couple, who are also philanthropists of the arts, we focused on the feeling of easy, yet elegant comfort. Their love of the arts is evident in their well-appointed and diverse collection of paintings and sculpture as well as the prominently displayed piano. As a nod to their alma mater, we incorporated orange and blue in surprisingly tasteful ways, from wall colors to carpets to patterned pillows.

Historic North Side Kitchen

In the fall of 2016, Sara Hillery Interior Design had the opportunity to partake in the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League’s biennial Designer House. The chosen house, a classic Georgian revival home located in historic Ginter Park, was designed by architect Courtenay S. Welton in 1929 and dubbed “Pineapple Acre”. SHID donated the time and materials for the project, which raises funds for the Richmond Symphony. SHID was tasked with transforming the kitchen, a dark, cramped, and non-descript space that didn’t reflect the owners’ playful and lively personalities. A Ron Johnson painting from Reynolds Gallery was the inspiration for the cheerful pink accents in our inspiration for this kitchen remodel. An octagon theme is the other unifying element, as seen in the graphic Walker Zanger tile, the painted floor, and the ceiling treatment that emphasizes the room’s height.

After pondering moving or building, this couple ultimately decided to invest in their home by adding a full two-story addition. With a husband who could give some local chefs a run for their money, we needed to design a kitchen with appliances worthy of his talent so that they could comfortably entertain their family and friends. A farmhouse sink, granite countertops, and miles of white cabinets create a tidy, sparkling kitchen where the food (and the person crafting it) are the focus. Mixing the husband’s love of the rustic with his wife’s propensity for cheerful color, the home features a calm, yet warm palette with pops of color, all beautifully lit with unique and carefully selected lamps, chandeliers, and sconces. With our help, they now have a family and pet friendly home to enjoy for many years to come.

West U Bungalow

This cozy yet classy updated bungalow vibrates with the energy from the young family (complete with children and pets) that dwell there. Looking to unite the old and new and give purpose to every inch, we focused on furnishings with classic lines that will stand the test of time and children. Monograms add a personalized touch, and beloved paintings encompassing both the pastoral and portraiture decorate the walls. We made sure to include playful colors and inviting textures in this clean and uncluttered dwelling, especially in the children’s room, to ensure that all ages feel at home.

Transitional Mediterranean

This family finally found a home in the arts district with ample space to accommodate their four children and pets after looking for years. The couple not only needed room for their growing children to run around but also to display their ever expanding art collection; browsing and buying new pieces is one of their favorite pastimes. The tall, airy ceilings and rustic details reflect the family’s grounded nature. We created a spa-worthy bathroom so expansive and welcoming, the children of the family may want to spend as much time there as their parents! That is, if they aren’t playing in the spacious great room or lounging on one of its plush seating choices.

A renovation of this classic French Colonial home became an opportunity for our team to unite the owners’ varied taste in art and furniture with their sentimental family pieces. The owners’ active lifestyle is evident in ways big and small: a bedroom features horse painting and a custom headboard made using horse- patterned fabric that also makes its mark onto pillows and a bench. Their grandparents’ antique sewing table stands in for a more traditional bedside table. Pattern play continues in another bedroom with large print floral crewel curtains matching a bed pillow, uniting the space and creating the basis for a relaxed feel of the French countryside.
